Portrait of Anna Mahler

Seated Nude

Koller-Pinell Broncia (born February 25, 1863 in Sanok, Galicia; † 26 April 1934 in Vienna) was an Austrian painter.

Life

The artist was born in the then Austrian Galicia Bronizlawa Pineles. She was born into a Jewish family. Her parents were the ceiling and woolen goods factory owner Saul Pineles (1834-1903 [1] [2]), and Clara, nee Herzig (1835-1910). 1870 she came with her parents to Vienna, where she received private lessons in painting from Robert Raab and Alois Delug. In 1885 she was the first time publicly exhibit a painting. 1885-87 she studied at the Munich Academy of Women Artists Association under Ludwig von Herterich. This was followed by exhibitions at Künstlerhaus, Munich and Leipzig. They also had good contacts with musicians and composers such as Hugo Wolf.

In 1896 she married a Catholic doctor Hugo Koller, with whom she had two children, Sylvia Koller (1889-1963) and the conductor Rupert Koller. The couple first lived in Nuremberg, but returned to Vienna in 1902. Here she was admitted to the group around Gustav Klimt and the Secessionists. In 1904 she moved to Oberwaltersdorf, where she had inherited a house that was set up by Josef Hoffmann and Kolo Moser. In this topsy-turvy house many important artists and scientists, such as Egon Schiele. After the First World War it had contact with Anton Faistauer, Albert Paris Gütersloh and Franz von Zülow.

Koller-Pinell Broncia was buried at the cemetery Döblinger.
Significance
Seated, 1907

Koller-Pinell Broncia is one of the most important artists of Austria at the turn of the century next to Olga Wisinger-Florian, Tina Marie Egner and blue. They went through many modern art movements, Impressionism, Art Nouveau to Expressionism and New Objectivity. Subjects of their paintings were mostly portraits, genre and still life. Her work was often controversial and subject to harsh criticism.
