Jacob Symonsz. Pynas

Drawings

Daedalus and Icarus

The brothers Jan Symonsz Pynas (c. 1583, Alkmaar - buried December 27, 1631, Amsterdam)[1] and Jacob Symonsz Pynas (c. 1592, Haarlem or Amsterdam - after 1650, Delft?) were Dutch painters of the Baroque period. Their sister Meynsge married the artist Jan Tengnagel in 1611.[2] Jacob may have briefly been a teacher of the Dutch master painter, Rembrandt, and the Pynas brothers are both a noted influence on him.[3] The Pynas brothers were grouped within Dutch artists called the Pre-Rembrandtists.

Their work is close in style to the painter Adam Elsheimer, and there has been a history of mis-attribution between the three, where the Pynas brothers are known to have signed their works "J. Pynas."[4]
